I don't really know how long the results and discussion section is supposed to be. It probably varies. I have only written about one aspect of my results so far. There are at least two more major areas. What I have written is not too rough either, so it shouldn't need as much revision as some other parts. I even tried to make the tables look nice. I should be able to finish another aspect tomorrow and the last aspect on Thursday. Then, I'll have Friday and Monday to revise and send off to the supervisor. I did some other stuff today like finishing off my analyses, rethinking some parts of my literature review and summarising my results. In short, I am pleased with what I have done today!

I have to give my discussion section to my supervisor by the 24th August, so I need to do a lot of work in the next week! I know what most of the trends are in my data. If I try to draw on any other explanations, I think I'll be told that I am only speculating. I think I have got my research questions more or less sorted out now. Here are the revised versions

1. Is there a relationship between year of study and the amount and type of orienting themes in psychology essays?

2. Is there a relationship between the disciplines of study and the amount and type of orienting theme in undergraduate essys? As measured by a comparison between the writing of 1st year Geography undergraduates and 1st year psychology undergraduates.

3. Is there a relationship between the types of grammatical subjects used in psychology undergraudate writing and those used in the professional writing studied by MacDonald?

OR

Are grammatical subjects used in psychology undergraduate writing as abstract and epistemological as those used in the professional writing studied by MacDonald?

I feel happier about this now. We talked a lot about my framework of analysis and I realised that they are two different analyses and I have to carry them out separately. I will also follow Hewings framework and MacDonald's framwork as closely as possible to allow for comparison. I am going to type up the framework now and do some more analysis. I must have adjuested the framework about 50 times!I hope this is the last time.

They need to be made more specific. They should be questions that I can actually answer! Sounds pretty obvious and is another instance of me seeing the world differently through student eyes. How many times as a teacher do you secretly think "How can he/she not remember that I told them to do that. How can he/she have forgotten already"? But of course now I am the student I realise that if your head is crowded with a million other things that you do forget.

It was useful. We discussed the literature review, my research questions and the framework of analysis. I think we may have found solutions to 2 of my biggest problems: the question of what phenomena is in student writing and the question of what to include in Theme. My literature review could be improved by adding more metadiscourse and more detail to some sections. I also need to make the last section more focussed on my study. All of this is positive. However, despite asking, I haven't left with a clear idea of how to present my framework and research questions and how to link them. Other useful suggestions were to combine analysis with writing the methodology section and to get someone else to code 5% of the data to get an idea of the consistency of it. I am exhausted now but I am going to go and try the step class anyway.

1. How is knowledge constructed in undergraduate psychology writing?

This questions assumes that all knowledge is constructed and that this construction can be seen in the sentences themselves. The construction of knowledge has been explained well in the Lit rev. I am not sure whether I have explained explicitly enought the second idea though, that analysis of sentences may reveal this construction and its nature. All the following questions contribute to answering this first one.

2. Are statements presented as facts or is there recourse to epistemic warranting?

This may be related to the hard or soft nature of knowledge in the discipline. Hard knowledge is often presented as fact and soft knowledge as contested with more epistemic warranting. I could include textual and experiential themes here as a kind of warranting. Textual themes can be seen as authorial intervention that guides readers through the text and tells them explicitly how to link ideas. Perhaps this is more linked to argument than warranting. Experiential Themes can be seen as warranting, I think, as they limit the scope of the proposition. Perhaps I should leave out textual theme completely or should I have a separate research question for it? Maybe, To what extent is the author guided through the argument explicitly?

3. What forms do the epistemic warrants take?

Do psychology students back up their knowledge claims with reference to research, theories, methods, their own point of view? Literature indicates that methods are seen as important. It might also be expected that students refer to others work rather than their own views as they are novices.

4. How visible is the author?

This question aims to look more closely at the authors interventions into the text and examine how direct they are. Students may become more indirect as they progress as indirect intervention is thought to develop later than direct intervention (Shleppegrell). Disciplinary norms may also be involved as science prefers more indeirect intervention in the empirical tradition. I need to check what the requirements are in Psychology, perhaps by looking at the APA style guide.

5. How does the author refer to previous research?

Again this question aims to loook more closely at one aspect of warranting, that of reference to previous research. Hyland's study shows disciplinary differences in reference to research with harder disciplines making references les visible. I also need to check what the APA style guide says about this issue. I may abandon this question as I cannot use Theme to measue the differences between visible and less visible references as less visible references will not be included in an analysis of theme.

6. What is the nature of the phenomena being studied?

This question will highlight what psychology students write about. Do they write about theories, important figures in psychology, the people studied, methods. Is student writing in psychology as abstract and epistemological as the professional writing studied by MacDonald? I also need to mention Gardner's study herre and Lewin, Fine and Young.

 Comments
</default:description>

I will attempt to state my research questions and the reasons for their inclusion.
